Description

How can science and advocacy come together to shape smarter, more compassionate policies around addiction and recovery? In this talk, Dr. Keith Humphreys will explore how research evidence can be a powerful tool for advancing effective public policy—while also highlighting the limits of science when deeper value debates are at stake. Drawing from years of experience at the intersection of research and policymaking, he will share practical strategies advocates can use to influence decision-makers, and cautionary lessons about the risks of oversimplifying complex issues. Attendees will leave with both inspiration and actionable insights for driving recovery-focused change in their own communities.

Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Explain how scientific evidence can inform and improve addiction and recovery policy decisions.

Identify strategies that advocates can use to effectively influence policymakers while maintaining credibility.

Recognize the risks of framing value-based debates as purely scientific issues and apply cautionary lessons to their own advocacy efforts.
