Description
Research continues to show what we believe impacts how we speak—and what we say matters. Language has a profound impact in substance use disorder-related work. This session will focus on utilizing strength-based, person-first recovery language and understanding the impact language has on those we serve. Together, we’ll explore how intentional word choices can reduce stigma, build trust, and serve as a foundation for trauma-informed care.
Objectives
1. Understand that substance use disorders are diseases, not moral failings.
2. Identify stigmatizing language and comprehend why language matters in peer support.
3. Apply strength-based, person-first language as a cornerstone of trauma-informed care.
