Description
Recovery housing is critical in helping many with substance use disorder achieve long-term recovery. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recognizes the NARR Standards developed by the National Alliance for Recovery Residences as an evidence-based model for operating quality recovery housing to help individuals with substance use disorder achieve long-term recovery. In 2023, SAMHSA published a paper entitled "Best Practices for Recovery Housing". This paper highlights eleven best practices for recovery housing, and references the importance of the NARR Standards throughout this paper. In addition, in October 2023, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) released their Fourth Edition of their Treatment Standards Criteria (https://www.asam.org/asam-criteria). Significantly, this update explicitly acknowledges Recovery Housing as a crucial component in the continuum of care for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. Recovery Housing is integrated into Level 1 care, emphasizing its importance as a supportive environment for sustained recovery. Stable housing plays a major role in people’s recovery from substance use disorders. SAMHSA includes access to a stable and safe place to live as one of the four major dimensions of recovery. Conversely, living without housing has been shown to amplify symptoms of SUD. Quality recovery housing plays a critical role and a vitally-needed path forward in the continuum of care for many individuals to experience long-term recovery. Workshop attendees will learn how ASAM criteria now includes recovery housing, what SAMHSA identifies as the eleven Best Practices for Recovery Housing and why they matter.
