Description

This session will provide a comprehensive overview of Equal Housing standards in recovery housing, based on the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) best practices. Attendees will learn about the importance of creating inclusive environments that support the unique needs and requirements of sex offenders in recovery. The session will cover non-discrimination policies, placement based on crimes and common barriers and how they effect sex offenders in finding housing. Additionally, all individuals, including sex offenders, have the right to be treated with respect as a human ensuring their basic human rights are not violated even as they face restrictions due to their offenses.

Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the importance of inclusive recovery housing and the complex and sensitive issues that require a balanced approach to protect public safety while also providing opportunities for reintegration while accessing recovery support. 2. Identify and implement NARR’s best practices for creating inclusive recovery housing environments. 3. Develop and enforce non-discrimination policies that protect sex offender housing while following local law and consideration for community engagement. 4. Understanding that long-term public safety is better served by reducing recidivism through effective recovery housing. 5. Recognizing that offering recovery housing over punitive measures to help men and women reintegrate into society. 6. Understanding the importance of collaborating within one’s community to provide opportunities for sex offenders living in a recovery residence.
